The Frogfoot – The Russian Fortress

In february 2009, Sukhoi’s venerable Su-25S (NATO reportmg name Frogfoot) celebrated three very impressive milestones. lt was 34 years since the type made its maiden flight, 28 years since it first attained operational squadron service and 22 years since the aircraft formally entered service with the Soviet Air Force. lt was the first Soviet mass-produced jet purposely designed for Close Air Support (CAS), and as such, remains a simple, effective and survivable attack workhorse; As many as 630 Su-25 Frogfoot-As were built for the .Soviet Air Force between 1979 and 1991 at the ceargia-based Tbilisi aircraft plant, now T (known as TAM (T bilisi AircraftManufacturin9), as well as 185 Su~25Ks for export, while 70 Su-25UB/ UBK,Frogfoot-B two-seaters rolled off the line at the aviation plant in Ulan Ude (UUAP), Russia; ln addition, around 22 Su-25T specialised tank- A1 busters were built at TAM (most of these, however, were partially completed and are still gathering dust in the assembly (hall) as well as three Su-ZSUM two-seaters, using incomplete Su-25T fuselages. The Frogfoot is known as the most cost-effective ground attack aircraft in the Russian Air Force (RuAF) today and it has been in active service in a number of hotspots around the fringe of the former Soviet Empire since 1991. Currently, the Su-25 equips six front-line units and one training regiment. Today, the RuAF and Russia’s Naval Aviation are known to retain a total fleet of around 200 to 220 Su-255, though no more than 100 of these could be considered airworthy at any time; 80-100 more aircraft from the initial production batches reside in long-term storage and have been offered for sale. The Su-25 has seen combat in several conflicts during its more than 25 years in service. It was heavily involved in the Soviet war in Afghanistan, flyingcounter-insurgency missions against the Mujahideen. The Iraqi Air Force employed Su-25s against Iran during the 1980–89 Iran–Iraq War. Most were later destroyed or fled to Iran in the 1991 Persian Gulf War. Abkhazian separatists used Su-25s in 1993 against Georgians during the Abkhazian War. The Macedonian Air Force used Su-25s against Albanian insurgents in the 2001 Macedonia conflict and, in 2008, Georgia and Russia both used Su-25s in the Russo-Georgian War. African states, including the Ivory Coast, Chad, and Sudan have used the Su-25 in local insurgencies and civil wars.
